See Jun Hong Loh perform Beethoven’s Sonata No. 5 in the clip above from the Singapore Violin Competition 2015
Earlier this month, Jun Hong Loh claimed first place at the Gisborne International Music Festival in New Zealand. The 25 year-old violinist from Singapore received a cash prize of $9000, as well as a solo engagement with Orchestra Wellington. One of the jurors at the December 5th competition referred to Hong’s piece as “poetic and soulful”.Loh took first over some extremely talented musicians including, Matthias Balzat, the youngest entrant, at just 16 years old. Matthias starting playing the cello at the age of 3 and was accepted into the University of Waikato’s Soloist Specialisation Bachelor Programme at 14.
Jun Hong knows what it means to be a musical prodigy at such a young age. His path wasn’t much different from that of Balzats. Loh too was admitted to a prestigious music program at the young age of 15. He became the youngest Singaporean admitted to the National University of Singapore after placing first at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music.
Jun Hong Loh now has a Masters of Music from the Julliard School. Loh has won numerous awards from all over the world and with his great talent will surely continue the legacy he has created.
